Adult Vaccination Guide for People Above 50: Flu, Pneumonia, Shingles and More
Reviewed by Dr. Murali Bhaskar (MBBS, FDM, MBA Healthcare) · 7 min read
Vaccines are not only for children. As we age, the body's protection weakens, and infections like flu and pneumonia become more dangerous — especially with diabetes, BP, heart or lung disease.
Vaccines commonly recommended after 50–60
| Vaccine | Protects against | Usual schedule |
|---|---|---|
| Influenza (flu) | Seasonal flu and its complications | Once every year |
| Pneumococcal | Pneumonia and serious blood/brain infections | 1 or 2 doses depending on vaccine type — your doctor decides |
| Shingles (herpes zoster) | Painful shingles rash and long-lasting nerve pain | 2 doses, 2–6 months apart |
| Tdap / Td | Tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough | Booster every 10 years, or after a deep wound |
| Hepatitis B | Liver infection | Usually 3 doses, if not already protected |
Can people with diabetes, BP or other illnesses take vaccines?
Yes — in fact they benefit the most, because infections hit them harder. The doctor checks for fever, recent illness, allergies and medicines (like steroids or cancer treatment) before giving a vaccine.
Common side effects
- Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site for 1–2 days.
- Mild fever, body ache or tiredness.
- Serious allergic reactions are rare; our doctor watches the patient for a short time after the injection.
Getting vaccinated at home
Our doctor can review your vaccine history, advise what is due, and give the vaccine at home. You receive a clinic-branded vaccination certificate with batch number and expiry details for your records.
